About Universal Credit

What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is a UK benefit that helps with living costs if you're on a low income or out of work. It replaces 6 older benefits: Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit, and Working Tax Credit.

How is UC calculated?

UC is based on your circumstances. You start with a Standard Allowance, then add amounts for children, housing costs, caring responsibilities, and disabilities. If you work, your UC reduces by 55p for every £1 you earn above your Work Allowance.

2025/26 Standard Allowance Rates

  • Single under 25: £316.98/month
  • Single 25 or over: £400.14/month
  • Couple both under 25: £497.55/month
  • Couple, at least one 25+: £628.10/month

Work Allowance

If you have children or have limited capability for work, you can earn up to £411/month (with housing costs) or £684/month (without) before your UC starts to reduce.
