Understanding Global Income Inequality

Global Perspective

If you earn more than $30,000 USD per year, you're in the top 1% richest in the world. The global median income is only ~$3,000 USD per year. Many who consider themselves "middle class" in developed countries are actually among the richest globally.

Cost of Living Difference

Raw income comparisons don't tell the whole story. $50,000 in San Francisco buys far less than $50,000 in Bali. Purchasing power parity (PPP) adjustments try to correct for this, but global comparison is still imperfect.

Interesting Income Facts

Global Top 10%

You only need ~$12,000 USD/year to be in the global top 10%. This includes most full-time workers in developed countries.

Gender Gap

Globally, women earn on average 20% less than men. The gap ranges from 5% in some Scandinavian countries to over 35% in other regions.

Peak Earning Age

Average income peaks between ages 45-55 in most countries. After that, it tends to gradually decrease as people approach retirement.

Median vs Mean

Mean income is often much higher than median because a few super-wealthy people pull up the average. Median (middle point) is a more representative measure of "typical" income.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does this data come from?

Data is based on estimates from the World Bank, OECD, and national statistics offices. We cover 190+ countries with 2023-2024 data. Numbers are estimates and may not reflect your exact situation.

Why do I feel poor if I'm in the top 1%?

We compare our wealth to people around us, not globally. If you live in a wealthy area, you'll feel "average" even when globally rich. Also, cost of living in wealthy areas consumes much of the income.
