Police Officer Pay Scales and Take-Home Pay 2025
We calculated the real take-home pay for every police officer rank from PC to Inspector. See what each promotion means for your monthly pay after tax, NI, and pension.
You've passed your Sergeant's exam, or you're thinking about going for Inspector. The pay tables show a nice gross salary increase, but how much of that will you actually see each month? We ran the numbers through our UK Salary Calculator to find out.
Police Pay Structure: How It Works
Police officer pay in England and Wales is set nationally and reviewed annually by the Police Remuneration Review Body. Unlike many public sector roles, police officers cannot negotiate pay individually - your salary is determined by your rank and pay point.
Key deductions that affect your take-home:
- Income Tax (20% basic rate, 40% higher rate above £50,270)
- National Insurance (8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above)
- Police Pension (currently 12.44% of pensionable pay for the 2015 CARE scheme)
- Student Loan (if applicable - Plan 2 at 9% above £27,295)
The police pension contribution at 12.44% is significantly higher than most private sector schemes, which means the gap between gross and net is larger than many expect.
Police Constable Pay Scale: The Full Breakdown
Starting as a PC and working up through the pay points:
| Pay Point | Gross Salary | Monthly Take-Home | Monthly Increase |

| PC 1 | £31,140 | £1,958 | +£143 |
| PC 2 | £33,453 | £2,093 | +£135 |
| PC 3 | £36,024 | £2,243 | +£150 |
| PC 4 | £38,556 | £2,390 | +£147 |
| PC 5 | £41,130 | £2,540 | +£150 |
| PC 6 | £43,032 | £2,651 | +£111 |
| PC 7 (top) | £46,044 | £2,827 | +£176 |
Key takeaway: From starting salary to the top of the PC scale, your gross pay increases by £17,493, but your monthly take-home goes up by £1,012 - that's an effective rate of about 69p in the pound reaching your account.
Assumptions: Outside London, no student loan, standard tax code, 2025/26 tax year.

Sergeant Pay Scale
Making Sergeant is the first major promotion. Here's what it means financially:
| Pay Point | Gross Salary | Monthly Take-Home | Difference vs Top PC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sgt 0 | £47,784 | £2,929 | +£102/month |
| Sgt 1 | £49,428 | £3,017 | +£190/month |
| Sgt 2 | £50,682 | £3,084 | +£257/month |
| Sgt 3 (top) | £52,734 | £3,174 | +£347/month |
The promotion gap: Moving from PC 7 (£46,044) to Sgt 0 (£47,784) is a gross increase of £1,740 per year, but only adds about £102 per month to your take-home. Why? You're now close to or above the higher rate tax threshold, where the marginal rate jumps from 20% to 40%.
Worth noting: the jump from Sgt 2 to Sgt 3 takes you above the £50,270 higher rate threshold, meaning part of that increase is taxed at 40%.
Inspector Pay Scale
The move to Inspector brings a substantial gross increase but the tax bite is significant:
| Pay Point | Gross Salary | Monthly Take-Home | Difference vs Top Sgt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insp 0 | £56,928 | £3,377 | +£203/month |
| Insp 1 | £58,560 | £3,454 | +£280/month |
| Insp 2 | £60,732 | £3,557 | +£383/month |
| Insp 3 (top) | £63,204 | £3,675 | +£501/month |
The higher rate squeeze: At Inspector level, all your pay increases are taxed at the 40% higher rate. For every £1,000 gross increase, you keep approximately £475 after tax, NI, and pension.
London and Regional Allowances
If you serve in the Metropolitan Police or City of London Police, you receive additional location allowances:
| Allowance | Annual Amount | Monthly Take-Home Boost |
|---|---|---|
| London Weighting (Met Police) | £2,697 | ~£155 |
| South East Allowance (inner) | £2,000 | ~£115 |
| South East Allowance (outer) | £1,000 | ~£58 |
Note: London weighting is pensionable, which means you pay pension contributions on it but also build a higher pension. The net monthly boost is therefore lower than you might expect from the gross figure.
The Pension Trade-Off
The 12.44% police pension contribution is one of the highest in the public sector. Let's put it in perspective:
| Rank | Annual Pension Contribution | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| PC (starting) | £3,551 | £296 |
| PC (top) | £5,727 | £477 |
| Sergeant (top) | £6,560 | £547 |
| Inspector (top) | £7,862 | £655 |
This is a significant chunk of pay, but the police pension is also one of the most generous:
- CARE pension accruing at 1/55.3 of pensionable pay each year
- Normal pension age linked to state pension age (currently 67)
- Ill-health retirement provisions
- Death in service cover
For most officers, the pension is worth substantially more than any private sector equivalent. Use our Pension Calculator to model your projected retirement income.
The Impact of Student Loans
Many newer recruits have student loans. Here's how Plan 2 affects take-home at each rank:
| Rank (top point) | Without Student Loan | With Plan 2 | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC 7 | £2,827 | £2,686 | -£141 |
| Sergeant 3 | £3,174 | £3,018 | -£156 |
| Inspector 3 | £3,675 | £3,506 | -£169 |
Plan 2 student loan is 9% on earnings above £27,295. This effectively acts as an additional 9% marginal tax rate on that income band.
Overtime and Unsocial Hours
Basic pay is only part of the picture. Police officers receive additional payments:
- Overtime: Time and a third for weekdays, time and a half for rest days, double time for public holidays
- Unsocial hours allowance: 10% supplement for regular shift working
- On-call allowance: £20 per session
A PC on shifts can expect the unsocial hours allowance to add roughly £200-£350 per month before deductions, depending on shift pattern.
Comparing the Career Path: PC to Inspector
| Metric | PC 0 | PC 7 | Sgt 3 | Insp 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gross Salary | £28,551 | £46,044 | £52,734 | £63,204 |
| Monthly Take-Home | £1,815 | £2,827 | £3,174 | £3,675 |
| Effective Tax Rate | 24% | 26% | 28% | 30% |
| Annual Pension Contribution | £3,551 | £5,727 | £6,560 | £7,862 |
From PC to Inspector, your gross salary roughly doubles, but your take-home roughly doubles too - the progressive tax system and pension contributions take a bigger bite, but promotions are still financially worthwhile.
